Dear colleague,

You are still in time to submit proposals for presentation at the III International Conference on Antimicrobial Research – ICAR2014, which will be held in Madrid (Spain) from 1 to 3 October 2014.

The deadlines for abstract submission are: 30 June for oral presentations and 30 July for poster/virtual presentations. Registration will be open until 26 August (early registration until 12 June)

ICAR2014 will be a forum to communicate current research priorities and progress, and to identify new approaches and research opportunities in the following fields:

  • Antimicrobial natural products
  • Antimicrobial microbes
  • Bacteriophages
  • Biofilms
  • Antimicrobial materials science and surface chemistry. Antimicrobials in consumer products
  • Antimicrobial chemistry
  • Non-antibiotic biocides
  • Antimicrobial physics
  • Clinical and medical microbiology, infectious diseases and antimicrobials. Public health
  • Strengthening of innate immune system as antimicrobial strategy
  • Antimicrobial resistance. Mechanisms of action of antimicrobial agents
  • Attenuation of virulence as antimicrobial strategy
  • Techniques and methods

Please, take some time to read the detailed list of topics proposed for the conference.

It is in the spirit of this conference to attract researchers from a broad range of academic disciplines that are contributing in the fighting against harmful microorganisms, not only those more traditionally involved in this research area (microbiologists, biochemists, genetists, clinicians…), but also experimental and theoretical/computational chemists (rational design of antimicrobial compounds, chemical synthesis, analogs, surface modification of materials…), physicists (radiation, nano-emulsions (surface tension), ultrasounds, antimicrobial materials, properties of nano-materials…) or engineers (technologies).

ICAR2014 consolidates a series of conferences, whose last edition, held in Lisbon-Portugal in 2012, received nearly 700 abstracts submitted for presentation and gathered around 425 researchers from nearly 60 countries. We expect this year’s edition to be as successful as the previous one in terms of quality, relevance and attendance.

Publications: the proceedings of the meeting will be formally released as a book that will be published by BrownWalker Press, which will ensure an adequate international distribution and availability of the book. Those researchers interested in submitting a full paper to be considered for publication in this book will have time until 22 October 2014.
The proceedings of the previous edition, titled ‘Worldwide Research Efforts in the Fighting against Microbial Pathogens: From Basic Research to Technological Developments’, were also published by BrownWalker Press in 2013. The table of contents of this book is available for readers.

We look forward to receiving your proposals for presentation at the conference.

Best regards,
Aurora Solano

Subject: [Microbiology] Call for nominations for the Leeuwenhoek medal

Please find attached a call for nominations for the prestigous Leeuwenhoek medal of the Royal Dutch Society for Microbiology.

This medal has been awarded ever since 1877, on average every 10-12 years, to a scientist who made very important and excellent contributions to Microbiology over the last 10-12 years.

Next to the medal, the winner will present his/her work at the KNVM symposium 2015 in Papendal and will receive an honorary membership of the KNVM (Royal Dutch Society for Microbiology).

Past winners include amongst others Louis Pasteur and Martinus Beijerinck.

We hope that you will help us to make this medal a success as we think that this will also further the promotion of microbiology in general.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me

Yours Sincerely

Jetta Bijlsma

Member of the Board of the Royal Dutch Society for Microbiology

ESF-EMBO Symposium
Synthetic biology of antibiotic production II

GoldenBall

30 August – 4 September 2014, Sant Feliu de Guixols, Spain

Chaired by: Eriko Takano, University of Manchester, UK
Co-chaired by: Rainer Breitling, University of Manchester, UK

Programme
This conference will focus on the advancement of synthetic biology, especially its application in the field of antibiotic production in filamentous fungi and actinomycete bacteria, including the implementation and modification of complex biosynthesis pathway modules in existing and new production hosts. It follows on from the successful first European Science Foundation-EMBO symposium on the Synthetic Biology of Antibiotic Production in autumn 2011 (meeting report: Takano et al., Mol. Micro. 2012), which brought together a highly interdisciplinary community and sparked many new collaborative research efforts.

Now, this meeting will explore the significant progress that has been achieved in the intervening 3 years, in synthetic biology as applied in the field of antibiotic production, including the implementation and modification of complex biosynthesis pathway modules, orthologous regulatory circuitry development, new production host development, and awakening sleeping clusters by use of synthetic biology. It will allow participants to see how far we have come in capitalizing on the major technological breakthroughs that were promised at the previous meeting.
